Hi, I’m Teddy Woods!
I am a fourth-year student enrolled in the History of Art (Hons) Programme at the University of Edinburgh, with concentrations in contemporary art, abstract art, and Chinese ink painting.
Since entering university, I have gained experience in art-handling, researching, web design, social media management, archiving, writing, and maintaining databases through four concurrent roles in Edinburgh as well as an internship in London. My four most significant commitments are with the ABACUS Edinburgh, Edinburgh Gallery Society, Ingleby Gallery, and JD Malat Gallery.
As the Head of Publicity at both the Edinburgh Gallery Society and ABACUS Edinburgh, I designed promotional materials and managed both group's social media presences. As a result of these roles, I have become experienced in creating and maintaining a content calendar, researching events and opportunities, liaising with collaborating partners, referencing interaction and follower analytics, and writing material for social media. At ABACUS Edinburgh, within three months, I increased engagement on the group’s primary social media platform by 503%, ‘reach’ by 82%, and follower count by 26% and retained a 60% increase in followers across my term. In both positions, I lead rebranding across logo, typeface, website, merchandise, and Instagram feed aesthetics as head of graphic design.
At the Edinburgh Gallery Society, the only student-run pre-professional organization within the Edinburgh College of Art, I have been involved in designing promotional materials and preparing exhibitions, such as packaging and preparing artwork for shipment, delicately handling and installing artwork, and recording the movement of all artwork involved in our shows and fairs. This year, I also took it upon myself to redesign the gallery’s webpage and to create a digital archive of its current and past exhibitions, complete with installation view photographs, artist statements, and digitized artwork. In order to take our exhibition archive to a professional level, I have been researching and consulting past artists to ensure accuracy in my documentation of previous shows.
At Ingleby, where I undertook a termed work placement, I have been primarily assisted the registrar of Ingleby Gallery in inventory inspection, conditions reporting, and with database and inventory management (including updating records, preparing images for digital archiving, and creating new database maintenance systems). Outside of working with the registrar, I also updated and reorganized the institution’s library and its accompanying database, researched external exhibitions of gallery artists and updating artist CVs, and compiled files for various departments. In order to best perform these tasks with precision and delicacy, I completed a certification through Sotheby’s “Running a Contemporary Gallery” source and participated in an opportunity offered by Professor Yang Chia-Ling, where we received an object handling demonstration and seminar on forgery identification at the British Museum. Additionally, with JD Malat Gallery, I assist the Operations Coordinator in arranging shipments and framing orders, receiving artworks to the gallery, and listing artworks within the database and ensuring their location. While at JD Malat I also prepare promotional materials, such as newsletters, press releases, and social media content.
Through these experiences, I have become very comfortable with gallery administration and a range of digital software related to gallery work, such as: Adobe Suite (including Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and Lightroom), Microsoft Suite (Excel, Powerpoint, Word, Teams), and web-based platforms including Google Workspace, ArtLogic, and Squarespace.
I aim to continually expand upon these experiences and continue my growth in the commercial gallery sector going forward. Department specific resumes are available for download and please do not hesitate to reach out via contact form with any questions!
With love,
Teddy
